Rolex is one brand that’s certainly got a number of well-known luxury watches in its catalogue; we’re talking classics like the Submariner, Daytona and Datejust—to name but a few. But what about those hidden gems? The watches that slipped under the radar, the ones that you maybe never even knew existed! Let’s see if these three Rolexes escaped your knowledge, shall we?
Rolex Turn-O-Graph
First launched almost 70 years ago, this model, also called the Thunderbird, was introduced before some of Rolex’s biggest icons, and it was the brand’s first watch with a rotating bezel that was made available to the public. Featuring an iconic red seconds hand, it became part of the Datejust collection not long after its original release, meaning it adopted the obligatory 3 o’clock date window—adding another useful function to its repertoire.
Rolex Cellini Prince
Now discontinued, this particular watch is part of one of Rolex’s lesser-known ranges—although the wider collection still has its fans; one being former US President, Barack Obama. This piece is pretty unusual thanks to its open caseback and its non-circular case and dial, two things very out-of-step with what we usually see from the crown but things that undoubtedly make it more interesting.
Rolex Oysterquartz
Another piece to break away from Rolex’s typical mould, this watch used a movement the brand would steer clear from today. Boasting an angular case similar to iconic sport-luxe watches like the AP Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus, this steel watch would have looked bang on-trend and futuristic, even, when it first appeared on the scene in the 1970s.
